Selaginella uncinata
Terrestrial, creeping plant suitable for terrariums, paludariums, and high-humidity indoor displays. Delivered as small stems only (not a pot or established clump).
Selaginella uncinata is a compact (also known as Iridescent Selaginella), low-growing spikemoss valued for its fine texture and subtle blue-green iridescence under shaded, humid conditions. It forms a tight, spreading mat, making it an excellent ground cover or foreground accent in tropical terrarium setups.
Important distinction: This plant is sometimes sold under the name Peacock Moss or Blue Spikemoss, the true Peacock Moss is Selaginella willdenowii. Compared to S. willdenowii, S. uncinata has:
- Smaller, finer foliage
- A more compact, creeping growth habit
- A subtler blue sheen that is highly condition-dependent
Both species are offered separately, as they differ in appearance and growth behavior.
On arrival, foliage may appear more green or olive-toned and will gradually develop coloration as the plant acclimates to stable humidity and light.
Details:
- Sold as 2-3 stems (not a pot or bunch)
- Low, creeping, spreading growth habit
- Fine blue-green foliage with iridescent sheen
- Color intensity depends on humidity and shade
- Ideal for terrariums, vivariums, and paludariums
Care Tips:
Prefers shaded to semi-shaded environments with consistently high humidity and evenly moist substrate. Avoid drying out or direct, intense lighting, which can reduce coloration. Best suited for enclosed or humidity-stable setups.
Note: Color, leaf size, and sheen vary with conditions. Appearance improves after acclimation and is never identical to Selaginella willdenowii.
