Red Jewel Cichlid

Also known as the Red Jewel Cichlid, Lifalili Jewel, or Blue-spotted Jewel Cichlid, this vibrant species is admired for its red body adorned with shimmering blue iridophore spots, the signature “jewel” effect. The name lifalili is often used in the trade for selectively bred strains that display a higher density of blue spots, a trait favored by aquarists.

Although listed among American cichlids for care similarity, the Red Jewel Cichlid is in fact an African species originating from the Congo region. Its behavior and requirements closely resemble medium South American cichlids such as Thorichthys and Aequidens, making it a natural fit for this category. These fish are best kept with robust tankmates, as their territorial instincts can surface unpredictably, especially during breeding.

Note: Pattern and intensity of coloration vary among individuals. Color brightness can change depending on mood, age, dominance, and environmental conditions. Selecting a specific pattern or shade is not possible.
