Cryptanthus Heyens

Young plant in a plastic pot, suitable for indoor pots, terrariums, vivariums, and paludariums.

Cryptanthus ‘Heyens’ is a terrestrial Earth Star bromeliad first introduced in 2014 and known for its elongated, upright growth habit compared to more compact forms. The leaves display vivid pink margins with a darker central band that may range from green-black to deep red depending on the individual plant and growing conditions. Some specimens exhibit stronger red tones overall, while others show more contrast between dark and fuchsia hues. The leaf edges are serrated and slightly undulating, contributing to its bold appearance. As with many Cryptanthus selections, coloration intensity and contrast vary with light strength, humidity, and maturity. The plant produces offsets over time and forms expanding clusters.

Plant Stats:

Type:
Bromeliad
Difficulty:
Moderate
Temperature:
18–30 °C
Humidity:
Medium (50–80%)
Maximum Size:
20–40+ cm in diameter
Origin:
Horticultural hybrid (Introduced 2014)
Natural Variation Transport

Cryptanthus naturally vary in coloration, contrast intensity, and form. Base coloration may range from darker green-black tones to deeper red hues depending on the individual plant and growing conditions. No two plants are identical. Minor cosmetic stress (leaf marks, slight color fading, or edge deformation) may occur during transport and is normal.

General Care

Provide bright indirect light and a well-draining substrate. Cryptanthus are terrestrial bromeliads and do not form a water-holding central cup. Keep the growing medium lightly moist but never waterlogged, allowing partial drying between waterings. Stable humidity and good air circulation help maintain coloration and structured growth.

Cryptanthus grow slowly and produce offsets around the base over time. Each rosette flowers once, typically producing small pale blooms, then gradually declines while leaving pups to continue growth. Suitable for terrariums, vivariums, and tropical plant displays.

Biosecurity Animal Safety

Plants are disinfected and maintained in low-risk conditions and kept free from animals. However, these plants were previously grown outdoors. For sensitive enclosures or animal habitats, we recommend additional sanitation before introduction.
